Definition of journalists' safety
Journalists' safety refers to the protection and well-being of journalists while they carry out their work. It encompasses the physical, psychological, legal, financial and digital safety of journalists, ensuring they can exercise their profession without facing threats, violence, harassment, censorship, or any other form of intimidation. When compromised, journalist safety has not only personal but also societal consequences (Slavtcheva-Petkova et al., 2023). Securing journalists' safety is important not only for their personal work and individual well-being but also to provide a framework for assuring freedom of expression and journalists' ability to serve their societies (Slavtcheva-Petkova et al., 2023). Journalists' safety have objective and subjective dimensions, while the risks they face are moderated by (individual) micro, (organizational) meso and macro (social system) level (Slavtcheva-Petkova et al., 2023).
