Senior lecturer
at
Department of Journalism, Stellenbosch University, South Africa
I have only recently joined the Worlds of Journalism Study as South African PI. Therefore, I have not done any specific research on this topic yet. I plan to follow up the surveys with interviews and focus groups.
Definition of journalists' safety
I believe journalists need to have the freedom to do their newswork without being threatened. Journalists are safe when they do not only have media freedom and freedom of expression, but also the freedom to do their job without fearing for their physical, psychological, or financial safety.
Future plans for research on journalists' safety
As mentioned above, I have only started with the work of Worlds of Journalism Study, so I plan to build on this study's findings and follow-up studies.
