Newman directs the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma Research Center housed at the University of Tulsa. Together with her students, they investigate many aspects of journalism and trauma. One line focuses on the occupational health of journalists, including trauma exposure, PTSD, burnout, resiliency, depression and substance misuse. Exposure to digital and physical harassment, physical safety, impact of graphic imagery are also parts of this. In addition, scholarship on ethics and trauma, and the the impact of trauma news on consumers are also areas of study. Further, she directs the creation of an online searchable database of articles related to journalism and trauma available at the Dart Center website (http://dart.jrn.columbia.edu/). She has also published several studies about trauma journalism education. Newman also offers training and consultations to journalists worldwide about self-care, interviewing victims, ethical issues regarding trauma and journalism, disaster responses, safety etc. She is one of the faculty of the first international doctoral course on journalist safety organized at OsloMet.
