journalists' safety; data gaps; gender-based attacks; access to information; politicians' hostility; trust in media

My broader research bridges political and communication science, focusing on three key areas: (1) the interplay between the state, political actors, and media, examining its influence on trust and information access; (2) the role of stereotypes in shaping gender representation; and (3) the use and impact of transparency policies. Regarding journalists' safety, so far, my main focus has been on data gaps (especially the absence of systematic data collection efforts about the issue on the national level), the role of law enforcement authorities in creating conditions conducive to free and independent journalism, and gender aspect of attacks against journalists. I have also studied journalists' experiences with accessing public-interest information from the public administration.

Definition of journalists' safety

I see journalists' safety as a state when certain legal, economic, political, and social preconditions are met that enable journalists to carry out their democratic intermediary and watchdog roles freely and without fear of repercussions. This includes legal protections against censorship and harassment but also positive legal obligations, such as access to public-interest information, economic stability to prevent financial pressures from undermining editorial freedom, and a political and social environment that values and safeguards independent journalism.

Future plans for research on journalists' safety

My work-in-progress and future plans include investigating politicians' hostility toward journalists and media and how it affects public attitudes, in particular, trust in media and other democratic institutions and processes.
