Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)

CPJ is an independent, non-profit organisation that promotes press freedom worldwide, and defends the right of journalists to report the news safely and without fear of reprisal. The organisation conducts research on global obstructions to a free press, advocates for the freedom and well-being of detained journalists, and works to ensure that journalists around the globe can do their jobs safely and securely.

History

The Committee to Protect Journalists was founded in 1981 by a group of U.S. correspondents who realized they could not ignore the plight of colleagues whose reporting put them in peril on a daily basis.

Today, CPJ’s networks are made up of journalists, researchers, and advocates, working together to support journalists and press freedom around the world.

Geographic scope / network

CPJ is headquartered in New York City and is made up of about 60 experts around the world. When press freedom violations occur, CPJ mobilizes a network of correspondents who report and take action on behalf of those targeted.

Key actions and/or campaigns

CPJ documents attacks on the press, reports on emerging trends or threats, and conducts advocacy with civil society, the private sector, multinational institutions and heads of state and high-ranking officials. 
CPJ focuses on a number of core issues:

● Technology, Surveillance, and Online Abuse

● Gender and Safety of Women Journalists 

● Sports and Human Rights

Finally, CPJ provides physical, digital, and psychosocial support to journalists worldwide. This is achieved through tailored safety workshops, one-on-one safety consultations, and publishing up-to-date safety information, as well as rapid assistance to journalists at risk.
