International Women's Media Foundation

The IWMF is the only global organization built to serve the holistic needs of women and nonbinary journalists. We are a bold and inclusive organization that supports journalists where they are with awards, reporting opportunities, fellowships, grants, safety training and emergency aid. As one of the largest supporters of women-produced journalism, our transformative work strengthens equal opportunity and press freedom worldwide. We also recognize fierce women journalists and photographers whose courage sets them apart. And we research the factors that allow journalism to remain dominated by men — while advocating for inclusive practices that help propel members of historically marginalized communities into leadership.

Journalists' safety focus:
Digital, Physical, Psychological, Financial, Legal

Geographic scope / network

The IWMF supports women and nonbinary journalists globally. In 2022, our emergency fund supported 191 journalists in 30 countries.

Key actions and/or campaigns

Since 2014, the IWMF has organized more than 50 Hostile Environment and First Aid Training (HEFAT) courses across the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Southeast Asia and Lebanon, reaching over 800 journalists from diverse backgrounds, mediums, and levels of expertise.

In 2022, they led vital digital safety trainings – both in-person and online – for  more than 530 journalists and 20 newsrooms, including The 19th, The San Francisco Chronicle, Documented, and The Seattle Times. We launched two globally accessible guides that prioritize online safety for women and nonbinary journalists:

·       "A Guide to Protecting Newsrooms and Journalists Against Online Violence"

·       "The Mental Health Guide for Journalists Facing Online Violence"

They are also the founding organization of the Coalition Against Online Violence. The CAOV currently brings together over 80 international organizations to support journalist facing digital attacks.

Methodology of monitoring

We receive intake requests through the CAOV and our emergency fund.
