Under the administration of Samia Suluhu Hassan in Tanzania, there has been some improvement in press freedom and a reduction in physical threats, which is reflected in its average score. Fewer journalists are reporting the cancellation of their licenses or the banning of their publications. However, there has been an increase in online attacks against journalists, particularly women, who face bullying and harassment for their reporting. This trend may explain the lower scores for psychological and digital safety, as all journalists face harassment online which would impact their mental and psychological well-being. The financial safety score highlights the precarious working conditions faced by many journalists, as many are part-timers or freelancers who need to supplement their income with other jobs. Additionally, economic challenges affect editorial freedom; newsrooms often rely on advertising revenue, making them more vulnerable to pressure from advertisers and powerful elite sources.
