Freedom of expression digital intermediary liability
Dr. Gascón’s main line of research is the regulation of Information and Communication Technologies and the protection of Human Rights, mainly freedom of expression including the right to information and personal data protection and privacy. She is interested in the safety of journalists and protection of journalism in a broad sense and media freedom in Europe from a legal perspective. She focuses on the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights and the EU proposals such as the European Media Freedom Act and the anti-SLAPP initiative.
Definition of journalists' safety
Journalists' safety regards an environment where journalists can work free from fear of physical or psychological attacks and with financial and legal security. For these, states should fulfil their positive obligations of prevention, protection and prosecution, as detailed in Recommendation (2016)4 of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on the protection of journalism and the safety of journalists and other media actors.Future plans for research on journalists' safety
My research will focus in the future in the creation of a positive and secure environment for journalists in a broad sense and media freedom in Europe from a legal perspective. I will follow and assess the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights and the EU proposals such as the European Media Freedom Act, the anti-SLAPP initiative and how the obligation on digital services affect journalists.- Research focuses:
